Historical Capital of Devon

Exeter has been the site of human settlement since before Roman times; these days it is a centre of culture and education, with many visible links to its diverse history.

St Peter's Cathedral, founded in 1050, is situated right in the heart of the city centre near the Princesshay shopping complex. The Cathedral area is a stunning example of one of Exeter's wide, open and relaxing city spaces, with plenty of unique shops, cafés and restaurants nearby.

Other places worth exploring include the Rougemont gardens, used every year by the Northcott Theatre Company for their summer outdoor performances, the Northernhay gardens and the medieval passages that run underneath parts of the city centre. The famous Quayside is another beautiful, historically rich part of the city with areas for shopping and dining.
