Local Area: Exminster
The village of Exminster lies south of Exeter, on the western side of the River Exe and Exeter Ship Canal. Its location is ideal for commuters and also lovers of wildlife: the Exminster Marshes are part of the Exe Estuary Nature Reserve, and walkers and cyclists will undoubtedly enjoy exploring the trails that lead to the river and canal. Powderham castle, dating from the 14th century, lies four miles south of Exminster and can be visited by the public.
The former Devon County Asylum, a grade II listed building, lies on the northwest side of the village. Closed in the mid-eighties, it fell into neglect until its redevelopment as a clutch of apartments and town houses, now known as Devington Park.
A general practice runs in the village at the Westbank Practice, located centrally. Exminster Community Primary School is on the Main Road on the south side of the village, and the New School Exeter, on the north side, provides independent education for children aged 3-7 years.
The village is well connected to Exeter and towns along the western side of the River Exe, with a main bus route as well as roads providing easy access to the city, M5 and the eastern side of the river.
