Local Area: Sidmouth
Long known as one of the most popular and beautiful seaside destinations in the southwest, Sidmouth is located on Devon's Jurassic coast, around five miles northeast of Budleigh Salterton. It is a thriving and large town going back to the Regency period, and has inspired praise over the years for the natural beauty of its surroundings and its ongoing status as one of England's most attractive beach resorts.
The town of Sidmouth is accessible from the A3052 which runs east from Clyst St Mary, just off Junction 30 of the M5. Regular buses run from Sidmouth to Exeter and Exmouth, connecting the town with the Exe Estuary. During the summer months, the Coast Hopper bus service connects Sidmouth with other towns along the Jurassic Coast, including Lyme Regis, Seaton and Bridport.
Sidmouth culture is still deeply rooted in the sea. Fishing boats depart each day from Port Royal and the town’s sailing club hosts an annual regatta. The town has many sporting facilities including Sidmouth Golf Club which overlooks the town and bay, and Sidmouth Cricket Club. Other entertainment can be found in the Manor Pavilion, a community theatre, and from the annual Sidmouth Folk Week. During this week, Sidmouth comes alive to the sound of hundreds of folk musicians tuning up and playing to audiences all over the town. The event attracts visitors from all over the country and beyond.
Education in Sidmouth starts with Sidmouth Infants School and All Saints C of E Infants School, continuing with St Nicholas C of E Junior School up to Sidmouth College. There are also a number of private schools in the area.
Sidmouth's Victoria Hospital has a minor injury unit on site, and many other departments provided by Devon PCT and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust. Sidmouth Health Centre runs a general practice and is twinned with Sidford Surgery nearby.
